Meet Christopher Reeve’s 3 Children, Who Keep the ‘Superman’ Star’s Legacy Alive

Reeve’s youngest son subtly honored him at the “Superman” 2025 premiere.

Christopher Reeve inspired children around the world while playing Superman in the ‘70s and ‘80s, but he didn’t need superpowers to be a heroic dad.

The former Man of Steel had three children. He shared oldest son Matthew Reeve and daughter Alexandra Reeve Givens with model Gae Exton. In 1992, he married actress and singer Dana Reeve. The couple welcomed their son William “Will” Reeve the same year. In 1995, Reeve had a horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down, per People. He died nine years later, in 2004.

While attending the premiere of James Gunn’s Superman in July 2025, Will secretly paid tribute to his late father. “I had an homage to him that I didn’t tell anyone about: I was wearing his cuff links,” the 33-year-old journalist shared in an interview with ABC News.

In the two decades since Reeve’s passing, all of his children have made it their mission to carry on the legacy he began with his wife, Dana. She died in 2006, following a months-long battle with lung cancer. Her son Will and step-children Matthew and Alexandra all sit on the board of directors of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a charity dedicated to finding treatments and cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injuries.

The 2024 BAFTA-winning documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story chronicles Reeve’s rise to fame and lasting impact as an actor and disability rights advocate. Its unflinching portrayal of his life before and after his accident garnered praise from his kids.

“There were high highs and low lows but also two deep true loves and [three] kids that together blended into this beautiful family,” Alexandra told People in September 2024.

Besides continuing their parents’ efforts, the Reeve trio have forged their own paths in entertainment, journalism, and policymaking. Here’s everything to know about Christopher Reeve’s three talented children.

Matthew Exton Reeve

Christopher Reeve and model Gae Exton welcomed his first child, son Matthew Reeve, on December 20, 1979. Matthew was born in London.

The oldest Reeve child followed in his famous father’s footsteps, going into the entertainment industry. After graduating from Brown University in 2002, he directed a documentary, Christopher Reeve: Courageous Steps, which his dad narrated. The project was nominated for an Emmy Award. Later, he received a dual MBA/MFA from NYU.

During the mid-2000s, Matthew pivoted from directing to producing short films and writing for television. According to his IMDB profile, he contributed to the storyline for nine episodes of the streaming series Agent Hamilton.

In 2009, Matthew ran the New York City marathon as a way to raise funds for spinal cord injury research. It was his first marathon, and a particularly meaningful event because he would be representing his parents’ charitable foundation by running for Team Reeve.

“I’m constantly grateful and appreciative of being able to do the simplest, most basic functions, and the fact that I have good health and can move normally. That’s something I’ve been more aware of and grateful for since the age of 15 than most people,” he told The New York Times, referencing his age at the time of his father’s accident. “There is a sense of, well, I can and I should.”

Now a dad himself, Matthew has a newfound understanding of Reeve’s power to stay involved in his and his siblings’ lives despite his paralysis. “Alexandra and I are both parents now. [Through that experience] you can understand where that sort of extra level of determination and perseverance would come from,” the 45-year-old filmmaker shared in a September 2024 appearance on Good Morning America.

As of 2025, Matthew lives in Stockholm with his wife, Swedish filmmaker Anna Lo Westlin, and their children.

Alexandra Reeve Givens

Reeve’s second child with Exton, Alexandra Reeve Givens, was born on November 25, 1983, in London. She’s the actor’s only daughter.

Unlike her older brother and parents, Alexandra decided not to go into the entertainment industry. Instead, she studied history at Yale University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She also received a law degree from Columbia University before landing her current role as president and CEO of the Center for Democracy & Technology, a nonprofit that aims to protect civil rights in the digital age.

Alongside her siblings, Alexandra reflected on her father’s life and legacy while promoting the Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story documentary in 2024. “Our dad had a near-death experience, so he knew not to leave things unsaid,” she told People that year. “Because we suddenly weren’t doing physical activities, we had a lot more time to sit and have conversations hanging out in his office. That was a true gift.”

When her stepmother Dana died of cancer in 2006, Alexandra and her older brother Matthew stepped in to help care for their younger sibling, Will, who was just 13 at the time.

“Matthew and Al, always in my life, not just in the hard times, have been sources of such strength and support and joy and love for me,” Will said in a 2024 interview with People.

In 2008, Alexandra married Yale classmate Garren Givens. The couple named their first child, son Christopher Russel Reeve Givens, after both their fathers, per a 2015 People report.

William “Will” Reeve

Christopher had one child with his wife, Dana Reeve. She gave birth to their son, William “Will” Reeve, on June 7, 1992. Three years later, Reeve’s life was changed by his shocking near-fatal accident. He passed away when Will was 12, and his widow lost her battle with cancer 17 months later.

Amidst the profound losses, Will moved in with his “beloved neighbors” and leaned on his siblings, grandparents, and wider community. “Everybody came through,” he told People in 2024. “I think it was an all-hands-on-deck situation.”

The youngest Reeve graduated from Vermont’s Middlebury College in 2014 with a degree in English and American literatures, according to his professional bio. Having spent two summers interning at Good Morning America, he seamlessly transitioned into a career in broadcast journalism, first reporting for ESPN, and now serving as a correspondent for ABC News.

In February 2025, ABC aired the special Will Reeve: Finding My Father, which followed the 33-year-old as he retraced his father’s final expedition before his 1995 accident. “My father was my hero,” Will said in the special’s trailer, as reported by People. “To millions, he was Superman. I idolize and miss a different Christopher Reeve… dad.”

Nevertheless, the 2025 Superman reboot starring David Corenswet prompted the journalist to reflect on his father’s most iconic role. Will has a brief cameo in the film as a reporter. “I do have a connection to this character, this franchise and movie through my dad. He defined the role for so many people for so many years. So, to be walking literally in his footsteps was something special to me,” he told ABC News of attending the premiere at the TCL Chinese Theater—the same venue where the 1978 film had its debut.

Will has been engaged to event planner Amanda Dubin since November 2024, per People. The couple made a joint Instagram post celebrating the relationship milestone, with Dubin captioning it simply “Us 🤍.”
